As of today, Loveland residents with current library cards will be able to sign up for Lynda.com, an online learning platform that offers a vast array of online classes and videos, from business principles to computer coding to photography.

The courses, which are developed and taught by recognized industry experts are professionally produced, providing a superior online learning experience not only for content but also for image and sound quality. The platform also regularly updates its courses so that content is current, cutting-edge and relevant to today’s learners of all ages.

According to Amy Phillips, head of Adult Services for the library, patrons had expressed interest in Lynda.com in the past but the cost was always out of reach. That is until last February when the library joined forces with the Flatirons Library Consortium, an association of northern Colorado libraries that have an agreement to share resources. “This membership enabled us to leverage the negotiation and purchasing power of the consortium to get pricing that allowed our library to subscribe to Lynda,” Phillips said.

In addition to accessing courses on the live website, users can download content to their own devices to view later. There is also a Lynda.com app. When signing up users are asked about their interests. The platform responds with specific course recommendations and provides information on course length, the level of difficulty and a brief overview. Users have the ability to search for courses using keywords and can add specific courses to playlists they create.

Lynda.com is owned by LinkedIn so people with LinkedIn profiles can add the classes they’ve taken to their LinkedIn profiles. LinkedIn users can also access Lynda with their LinkedIn logons.

The library will offer Lynda’s ‘Premium’ version, which opens Lynda’s entire catalog to users at no cost as long as they have a current library card. If users were to sign up independently, they would being paying nearly $500, annually.

To sign up patrons with current library cards can go to www.lovelandpubliclibrary.org. A link to Lynda is available from the homepage. Residents wanting a library card can go to the front desk at the library. They must present a current I.D. and be a Colorado resident.

“We are very excited to be able to offer this fantastic new resource to our patrons. It’s important for modern-day libraries to keep moving forward and offering materials and technologies that help people enrich and transform their lives. The addition of Lynda will allow us to help people gain 21st century skills when it works for them without having to drop everything to attend a class,” said Phillips.
