A Continuous Flow Intersection (CFI) is
planned for the Madison/Eisenhower intersection. Why?
Because the number of southbound Madison motorists turning
left onto Eisenhower has grown, causing a two-fold problem:
- Southbound
Madison left-turners sometimes have to wait two or more
traffic-light cycles.
- Extending the
Madison left-turn arrow time means everyone else has a longer
red light.
Using typical double left-turn
lanes also has two major problems:
- It
doesn't increase the green-light time for everyone else.
- It
would require significant land from the 7-Eleven and
Flowerama stores with major detrimental impacts to those
businesses.
The CFI design is the best solution:
- All southbound
and northbound left-turn and through traffic move
simultaneously...really!
- Green-light
time on Eisenhower will be increased.
- Extra land
comes from the opposite corners - the "fireworks stand"
empty lot and grassy area on Sam's corner.
- It will cost no
more than a conventional intersection expansion.
