Bike Rodeos
a Huge Success in April at 3 Elementary Schools!

Gracious
Volunteers Make Bike Rodeo Dream Come True
Retired
Principal Sharon Olson & Crime Prevention Officer Dave Sloat had
a vision to bring back Bike Rodeos to Loveland students. Bike
Rodeos promote the choice of bicycling to school by teaching
students skills in riding, safety awareness and proper
maintenance.
The City
of Loveland’s “T-n-T Tuesdays” Safe Routes to School program
provided a perfect vessel to make it happen. Rodeos are being
held on-site, after school on Wednesdays April 15-29 at the
first 3 “tennies-n-tires” schools: Centennial, Garfield & Winona
Elementary.
Local
bike shops: 3xFast, Peloton Cycles, Rocky Mountain Cyclery &
Trek Bicycle Store of Loveland provided mechanics to inspect
each participant’s bicycle mechanics and fit. They brought out
their tools and carefully & thoroughly inspected each and every
bike, fixing and wrenching, pumping and adjusting.
PEDAL,
the Cycling Club of Loveland, designed the 8 station educational
course that students traveled through. PEDAL members chalk out
the course and train the station volunteers.
Loveland
High School Key Club Students assisted with the setup & teardown
and helped students through the 8 stations. They received
training by PEDAL prior to the events & were looked up to by the
elementary student participants. High School Students are SO
COOL!!
Local
businesses & other organizations: Lee’s Cyclery, CanDo Coalition
for Activity and Nutrition to Defeat Obesity, Prosci Research,
AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, Healthy Kids Club & Safe Kids
of Larimer County provided donations of money, supplies and
volunteers.
Bike
locks and helmets were given to each child that needed one.
Parents were given an opportunity to watch the film; “Children
in Traffic” while their child road through the course.
Many
thanks to each and every volunteer & sponsor who helped make the
Bike Rodeo an excellent learning experience.
Please
make safe bicycling and driving a lifetime commitment, not just
a one-day "crash course"!
