The City of Loveland's historic preservation program is intended to protect, enhance and perpetuate the use of historic properties in the Loveland community. Loveland's Historic Preservation Commission, comprised of eight members (one member is a high school student) appointed by City Council, is responsible for recommending historic landmark designations to the City Council, administering the Landmark Rehabilitation Loan Program, and promoting historic preservation through education and community outreach. As of October 2017 there are 74 properties listed on Loveland's local historic register.
The City of Loveland is a Certified Local Government, a status authorized by the National Park Service and the Colorado State Historic Preservation Office. Among other benefits, this status grants the City of Loveland access to funding set aside specifically for Certified Local Governments.
In addition to the pride in ownership and the protections provided by historic designation, historic building owners may take advantage of tax incentives and compete for grant programs to maintain their historic properties. The program is a voluntary program and requests for register listing must be signed by the property owner.
