Car Seat Information and Resources

Did you know that in Larimer County, motor vehicle crashes are the second leading cause of trauma-related hospitalizations of children ages birth to 14 years old? Statistics show that about 80% of child passenger safety seats (car seats and booster seats) are not installed or used correctly. Sadly, this can often result in injuries that could otherwise have been less significant, or in some cases, completed avoided.

These injury statistics are not always from a lack of trying. Most parents and caregivers do attempt to install and used child passenger safety seats. But car seats can often be difficult or complicated to properly install. Our program is designed to help parents and caregivers learn how to best install their car seats to provide the highest possible level of safety.

Are you sure that your child's car seat is installed properly? Is it the right size and type for your child? Has the seat been recalled? When should your child be placed into a larger or different type of car seat? We can answer these questions and more!

Car Seat Classes

Safe Kids Larimer County and partners are pleased to offer two classes per month for families in need of a car seat/booster seat for their child.  This is a great way for parents and caregivers to learn State laws and best practices related to car seats and booster seats. Participants can then receive a new car seat or booster seat appropriate for their child in exchange for a small donation to help support the program. Registration is required and distribution is limited to one (1) seat per family, per year. Classes are offered in both English and Spanish. Se habla español.  For more information, including class locations, schedules, and registration, please call (970) 495-7508.

Car Seat Recycling

The City of Loveland’s Recycling Center is now able to accept used child passenger safety seats (aka: car seats, booster seats) to be recycled. As you may know, these types of seats have a limited lifespan, and should be taken out of service if they are expired, recalled, or have been in a significant crash. In an effort to keep these potentially dangerous car seats out of landfills, garage sales, and re-sell shops, the City of Loveland’s Recycling Center, located at 400 N. Wilson Avenue, can now accept them. The recycling center is open Tuesdays through Sundays (closed on Mondays and major holidays) from 7:30am – 4:30pm.

There is no fee for dropping off car seats for recycling, however, residents will first need to remove non-plastic parts, such as fabric, padding, Styrofoam, harness straps, buckles, etc. There will be a trash receptacle adjacent to the car seat drop off container for those non-recyclable parts.
