In 1995, the citizens of Larimer County
approved a quarter-cent sales and use tax to protect open space, natural
areas, wildlife habitat, regional parks and trails. Loveland receives a
portion of these funds, and manages its Natural Areas / Open Lands Program
through the Parks and Recreation Department. A citizen advisory board made
up of 10 members makes recommendations to the Loveland City Council
regarding the program. The Open Lands Advisory Commission meets the second
Wednesday of each month to discuss the Natural Areas. These meetings are
open to the public.
On some occasions, the City partners with other agencies to maximize
resources in securing valuable properties. Examples of such properties
would include the Fort Collins/Loveland separator, the Devil’s Backbone
and Hirsch Farm at Boyd Lake.
