The Big Thompson River flows through the park past the picnic areas and pathways.

Big Thompson River at Viestenz-Smith Park
The river flows pretty quickly during the Spring thaw, and can be wonderful to sit and watch or listen to while having your family picnic. The Big Thompson River in Viestenz-Smith Park
The history of Viestenz-Smith and the old power plant is recorded on educational boards near each feature. They are fascinating to look at and read. You can learn about the amazing flood which destroyed the original power plant, too. Remains of the historical site of the Loveland Power Plant
There are many open grassy areas to sit at while enjoying a beautiful day in the park. Bring a book to read, or even a blanket to lay on in the sun! Grassy Picnic Areas at Viestenz-Smith
There are picnic tables throughout the park for sitting and enjoying a meal with friends or family, or just relaxing after a hike on the Foothills Nature Trail.. Picnic Tables in Viestenz-Smith Mountain Park
This picnic area is very near the water, and is one of the more popular spots to sit. A picnic table near the Big Thompson River!
The playground area has been upgraded, and offers the children a place to play in these great surroundings. Playground at Viestenz-Smith
The "dugout" is an area which is not reservable, but offers a place to sit near the Tailrace Pond. It has shelter under the roof, and a deck to enjoy. Deck overloooking the Tailrace Pond
The Tailrace Pond is a peaceful place to sit and watch all of the wildlife around you.
The plant life here is wonderful too!
The Tailrace Pond along the path
The pathway goes around the Tailrace Pond and leads to the Reservable Area #2 located on the far east side of the park. The Path through Viestenz-Smith Park
Many wildflowers are in bloom during the year, and make a great background for family photo opportunities. Flowers along the path
The wildflowers grow right along the pathways and can be enjoyed by everyone as they walk around the park. Wildflowers are all around!
They have so many wonderful colors, and fragrances to overwhelm your senses! More wildflowers along the path!
We hope you enjoy the park when you visit, and stop to smell the flowers along the way. A field of flowers next to the path
